How this pantry inventory calculator works

This calculator totals the value of your pantry, fridge, and freezer items, then sorts stock into expiry buckets such as expired, urgent, watch, and safe. It assigns a waste-risk weight to each bucket to estimate how much value could be lost if the current stock is not used in time.

It also compares your total pantry value against your daily grocery spending reference to estimate how many days of food coverage you already have at home. That helps reduce duplicate buying and makes meal planning more efficient.

Core formulas

Item value = quantity × unit cost

Waste risk value = Σ(item value × expiry risk weight)

Coverage days = total pantry value ÷ daily grocery cost reference

Coverage share = total pantry value ÷ grocery budget reference
The expiry engine uses four buckets. Expired items are weighted at 100% risk. Urgent items are weighted at 70%, watch items at 30%, and safe items at 0% for waste-risk estimation.

Why duplicate detection matters

Many households buy items they already have because stock is fragmented across the pantry, fridge, and freezer. Duplicate detection is not perfect, but it helps flag likely repeat purchases and turns the calculator into a shopping control tool, not just a stock list.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as pantry value?+
Pantry value is the estimated replacement cost of the food items you currently have at home, based on quantity multiplied by the cost per unit you enter for each item.
How is waste risk estimated?+
Items are grouped into expiry buckets, then weighted by estimated risk of being lost. Expired items count fully, urgent items are heavily weighted, and watch items are partially weighted.
What are coverage days?+
Coverage days estimate how long the current stock value could support food spending if you delayed shopping. It is based on pantry value divided by your daily grocery cost reference.
Why does the calculator show do-not-buy items?+
It flags duplicate item names so you can see where shopping may overlap with what is already in the house. This reduces repeat purchases and unnecessary stock buildup.
Should freezer items be treated differently?+
Freezer items usually carry lower short-term expiry pressure than fridge items, but they still represent money locked into inventory. This page tracks them alongside pantry and fridge stock for total household food value.
