🇧🇪 Belgium Payroll Notes
Employee social security is a major deduction before income tax
Professional deduction reduces taxable income in this simplified employee model
Municipal surcharge sits on top of federal income tax
Single only in V1
Employee only not self-employed or director payroll
A Belgian employee salary estimate is more than one headline tax rate. A practical payroll-style estimate starts with gross salary, subtracts employee social security, applies a simplified employee professional deduction block, calculates progressive federal income tax, then adds a municipal surcharge. That is why a generic tax-only model often misses the true take-home effect.
Gross salary input
− Employee social contribution
− Professional deduction estimate
= Taxable income (after deductions)
Apply progressive federal tax
− Tax-free allowance effect
= Estimated federal income tax
+ Municipal surcharge
= Total payroll deductions in this model
This version is intentionally simplified and built for employee salary only.
Belgium Progressive Tax Structure
Belgium uses progressive personal income tax bands, so the next slice of taxable income can be taxed at a higher rate than the previous slice. That means crossing a threshold does not tax the full salary at the top rate. It changes the tax only on the relevant portion above the threshold.

Professional Deduction in This Calculator
This build includes a simplified employee professional deduction block because many salary estimates feel wrong when taxable income is treated too mechanically. In auto mode, the calculator applies a practical employee deduction estimate and respects a year-specific cap. Manual mode is there for anyone who wants to override that block.
Municipal Surcharge Explained
Municipal tax in Belgium is not a separate federal bracket. It is an additional surcharge applied to the calculated federal income tax. This is why two people with the same salary can still see slightly different final outcomes if their municipal surcharge differs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Belgium salary tax just one rate?+
No. Belgium salary tax is progressive and this calculator also includes employee social contribution and municipal surcharge, so the payroll effect is broader than one federal rate.
Why is social contribution shown separately?+
Because employee social contribution is normally deducted before the federal income tax estimate is final. It materially changes taxable income and net salary.
Why does municipal surcharge matter?+
Because it is added on top of the estimated federal income tax. Even when the percentage looks small, it still changes final take-home pay.
Why can my payslip differ from this estimate?+
Real payslips can differ because of withholding scale mechanics, benefits, sector rules, dependants, holiday pay, 13th month rules, and other payroll adjustments not modeled in V1.
Does this include meal vouchers or company car logic?+
No. Those items are intentionally excluded from V1 so the salary engine stays clear and payroll-focused.
